As a Stopfordian I can clarify that this is probably true.
We're all a bit patriotic up here, perhaps because we all wear and make top hats.

I own a top hat made locally
and a hat from the Hat Museum. I've also been to the Hat Museum more than once.
I don't speak with a particularly Northern accent, either... but I'm naturalised Stockport so I guess it doesn't count.
