I get this - it seems to be some kind of nervous reaction to awkward situations.
"hi mate, you coming out for a drink tonight?"
"no, my mums collapsed - doctors reckon she wont make it through the night"
"pfffhahah....oooh....err....no....thats terrible, I'm really sorry. Listen, if there is anything I can do for you...."
But the damage is always already done.
