FantasticWe did exactly the same thing to this poor Scouse girl when going to Scotland from England.
It backfired about a year later when going to France though.
Got all the way to Dover and I said "right, we have *all* got our passports right?"
Ahem. Apparently, after finding out the truth about the Scotland incident she decided that I must have been joking about needing a passport to get into France and didn't even possess such a thing.
Had to forge a signature in the post-office to get a BVP very quickly!
