Take a screenshot of the desktop background. Then set the screenshot as the desktop background. Then hide all the icons.

Old ones are the best.

dont forget to minimise the start menu to it's lowest few pixels and set it to autohide.

Also works well with a login screen. We actually built a "functioning" windows login box at school, it looked like a perfect windows 2000 professional login. The best bit by far was that when the user entered their username and password, it would actually try and connect to the drive space on the network that would be associated with that account, if it succeeded, the password would be saved to a text document on the hard drive, for later pickup. Oh what larks when they log in the next time with 30,000 icons on their desktop. For the record, make sure you disable the ctrl and alt keys :P

...and much to my surprise it worked.

He'd rebooted 3 times before I explained.
