Funnily enoughI've read the book that film is based on, but haven't seen the film. I can confidently say that the film is probably not a very faithful adaptation, as whilst the book is a thrilling story exploring naturally occuring psychoactive drugs and their role in Haitian Voodoo culture, at no point does anything like that scene happen.
It's by Wade Davis, who's an anthropologist and biochemist. I thoroughly recommend it.
