I don't knowI find the perpetual use of "Sir" or "Mr ShinyShiny" annoying as well, especially if it's from a business that I have a long-standing relationship with e.g. my bank.
Can't they just stick a field in their call-centre GUI called "preferred form of address" and then stick to it?
That way the ones who like "mate", "sir", "Mr So-and-So", "Madam" "Miss" "Ms" or just their name will be happy. So will the people who want their bank to call them "O Glorious One", "Great and Bountiful Source of our Profit" or "Fucknuts".
