The worst insult anyone can think of
often reflects the characteristic that they fear most finding in themselves.
For example, when I worked with troublesome adolescents I was sometimes called a 'tart' by the female 'clients'. The facts that a. I was old enough to be their mother and looked it and b. most of them were already on the game rather took the sting out of this affront.

Indeed. I believe it was Winston Churchill who observed that when he was 16 his parents knew absolutely nothing
and by the time he was 21 he was thoroughly impressed with how much they'd managed to learn in the past five years.
