Similar things have happened to me.
I've posted stories to QOTW and come the close, my post is exactly where I left it. Nowhere near the 'best' page.
Of course, this might be because I'm not very funny and nobody would click 'I like this' to anything I've previously posted.

The votes I seem to get have no relationship with the amount of effort I've put into a post
I've also had stuff on the best page that's rather shite, but that's mainly because it's been a crap qotw and barely anyone has managed to get votes. I know the mods fiddle around a bit, but I don't believe it's been with my posts... I'm not important/popular enough to be a problem ^_^
Also, surely the best thing to do in Legless' case would have been to leave the post, but exempt it from a newsletter mention because it's an in-joke?
