I should think there is many a tale to be told along these linesAlthough I suspect my cat, being as stupid as he is, has probably genuinely forgotten he's been fed.
He's the sort that looks out the cat flap in the back door and sees it's raining, and then tries the front door to see if the weather's better out there.

Mine do thatElwood, when she was alive, used to knock to come in to use the litter tray then ask to be let out again.
