I've lived in France for nearly 6 years nowAnd it never ceases to amaze me how so many French people work from the assumption that anyone they deal with will try to con them out of something. The other day I had to argue with a dinner lady in the staff canteen who insisted that I had taken a yoghurt the previous day without paying for it, as if I really had nothing better to do than nick a few cents worth of dairy products off my employer. But the possibility that she might be mistaken clearly had not crossed her mind.
I'm sure your hotel bill was already high enough that conning a free breakfast out of them would have made little difference.
