He didn't know it was a coverConversation with the professor turned towards an unexpected topic: how 'covers' of pop songs are rarely as good as the originals. He asked me to name one cover that was better than the original. I said I thought Billy Idol's "Mony, Mony" was better than Tommy James and the Shondell's original version. He howled in anguish: apparently I had tossed a hand grenade into a particularly-precious but private memory.
