A friend had wierd banging noises in his house for months and was deeply, deeply worried that it was the result of getting drunk and attempting to summon the devil.*

I did a spell once...it required dragon's blood, which isn't that easy to find in London. So I used tomato ketchup instead. The spell involved filling a pillowcase with the incredients, including pepper and lavender. It was supposed to stop nightmares, but instead, I ended up dreaming about nightmarishly large chips all night. And I woke up with an earful of tomato ketchup. Nice.
