Changing Your Mind
monkeon writes, "People tend to seek things that back up already held beliefs, but what books, films, or real-life events have actually changed the way you think about a subject?"

I once read Zen and the Art of Motorcyle Maintenance
by Robert M.Pirsig.
I did enjoy reading when I started it, at the end of reading it I had changed my mind and hated reading.

I learned how to read.
... At first I was happy to be learning how to read. It seemed exciting and magical, but then I read this: Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand. I read every last word of this garbage, and because of this piece of crap, I am never reading again!

people only have Ayn Rand
on the bookshelf to make them look intellectual. They think that it will confer 'intelligence' upon them by having read it. It wont.

I don't believe anyone's ever read Ayn Rand
After the first fifty pages it's just endless pages of random words.

every single fucking list
of books you "should have read".
So I did
It was pretty awesome, but only once you get over the fact that it is in fact just an existential essay woven into a pretty average 'journey' timeline. I liked it
but I'm not sure its 'one of the most important books of the 20th century' blah de blah de blah...

I worked through that book...
And came out at the other side not really knowing what I had read.
I was quite young at the time though and had managed to convince myself that it was a cool book. I then read the follow up Lila and that was equally incomprehensible.
Looking back now, I think I only read it because I could not afford a motorbike, but I have a slightly different understanding of Quality.
