In slightly similar vein, I got a job in a callcentre building bespoke s/w for client call desks. Another project was due, the client had signed up for £25m contract(30 outbound callers for a few years), developer had worked offsite to build the supporting system. 4 days before contract to go live turns out developer hadn't built. I thought, Aha! opportunity so offered to step in. 4 18 hour days, system went live one day late, me expecting a hero's reward. Two weeks later I had been 'let go' other developer promoted 'for shipping on time and on budget'.
I had not calculated for my success making IT management look like wankers for letting issue happen. Easiest response for them was to chuck me, promote the other, and pat selves on back for on time (+1 day) delivery.
That one smarted for a while ;-).
