This is a question Lies that got out of control

Ever claimed you could speak a foreign language to impress friends, colleagues and/or get laid? Make a twat of yourself - and I couldn't possibly comment - saying you were the godson of the chairman of BP? Tell us how your porkies have caught up with you

(Thanks to augsav and Sandettie Light Vessel Automatic for the suggestions)

it's just a lie
like all those people you went to school with who asid they lost their virginity on holiday, when in actual fact they didn't lose it until they were 22, that night when their aunt was a bit drunk...

That's right.
Don't English people say this? It's apparently a cliche for Americans to have imaginary Canadian girlfriends.

Ah. The penny drops.
Now, I'm Scottish, so I wouldn't know if there's an English equivalent of the Canadian gf thing...but I suspect not. I think the closest thing in the British Isles is 'yeah, no, honest, she goes to The Other School*'

*all schools and universities in the UK come in rival pairs. Eton and Harrow or Oxford and Cambridge are just the most well known examples.

Yup Yup Yup
Had a mate called Duncan while I was at 2 Infantry Div in York who had an imaginary Scottish Girlfriend who no-one ever saw. Never thought to call him on it, till the day Duncan got pulled by the police while driving up the A64, while in the company of a Staff Sergeant from the Queens Regiment. They were both dressed as women, which proved a slight problem when asked for identification by plod. After this Duncan 'came out' and moved into a flat in town, where he is now known as Helen.

I stand corrected and faintly appalled.
Of course, the guy was apparently a loony, so could just be him.
