I think that whilst many things would be better without the armed forces,many many things would also turn to shit very quickly.
Society just isn't ready to grow out of the closed tribes mindset. Ditching religion would be a good start.

meh..ditch religion and people would easily find other things to fight about. Religion isn't the problem, the religious are the problem sometimes, sometimes it's the irreligious.
