Personally I've never seen the point of it though.
Why spoil a perfectly good cake? If you don't want to get fat, don't eat so much cake. Better a small amount of something nice than a big helping of something rubbish.
The same applies to low fat spreads. And semi-skimmed milk, although I seem to be in the minority with my views on the latter.
Edit - it's OK for medical reasons, obviously.
