that's weirdI just remembered (thanks to your story) that in my childhood my family used to say 'Black enamelled toothbrush'..I think it was a polite way of saying 'bastard' in front of the kids. (and saying 'cheesy peeps' instead of 'jesus').
Maybe your lot subverted the saying, by using the word bastard anyway..just a thought.
