Thanks, but...I'd just finished shopping with the GF. While I took the trolley back to the rank, she took a moment to sit in a corner, by the main entrance, while she sorted out her change, keys etc. So she's sitting on the pavement, with her large shabby dog next to her. A smart city gent type emerges from the supermarket, packet of luxury croissants in hand, and seeing her makes a reasonable assumption that she's a homeless junkie and tosses a couple of coins down in front of her.
He really couldn't understand why the recipient of his largesse was now chasing him down the road hurling abuse and coins at him.

during my crusty punky youthI was waiting on a bus stop and a homeless guy, seeing me as a kindred spirit, offered me a bite of the pasty he'd just fished out of the bin

While queueing at a kebab van one eveningI heard a middle-aged guy ranting and raving at a volume that only alcohol or insanity can confer, and a student offering him 50p to get himself something hot to eat. When I turned round I realised it was the physics don at my college.
