Hot chemical smellsI've just replaced a leaky memory backup battery in a piece of test equipment. It's dribbled nicad electrolyte all over the board, which of course releases a wide variety of odd smells when the soldering iron heats it up. I wasn't surprised by the more acrid smells but the sweet fruity ones were a bit odd.

That'll be caused by some kind of acetate compounds.Most probably ethyl acetate and isoamyl acetate, or something similar.
