There's some truth in this
If one of your senses if overloaded with information, your brain is less likely to pay too much attention to other senses.

It's the reason why you tend to want to turn down the stereo when you pull over to read the map. Although logic states that there's no reason why loud music could affect your ability to read, people tend to feel the need to turn down the volume anyway, because then they can concentrate better on reading the map.
