It is shaped a mini bit like the symbol, though (two lobes narrowing at the base).Otherwise how/why would that symbol have come to represent the heart?

It doesn't.It's a spread open vulva. The clitoris goes at the top, the anus a short distance below the bottom. The two sides are the labia minora, as if held open by their owner to invite you in to her vagina.
You may also like to know that maypoles aren't so innocent, either. And neither is morris dancing.
