I'll have you know that it was roughly squared baulk timber. Approximately 8" by 8".
The references to 2x4" planed timber were added to the bible in the 352AD "Sons of the Jews" edition. Later edited by the Magisterium Falsus Illuminati of the 1400s which stipulated less expensive chipboard.

Have you also heard of...
... the "Green Peace" edition by Brad, that suggested Jesus was forced to construct his own cross from paper mulch and compost. This being due to the Jewish legislation on global warming and recycling.
