If it makes you feel less stupid...
I moved from the countryside to go to uni in Swansea, and the whole three years I lived there I thought that 'TAU' on the front of police vans was the Welsh word for 'Police'. . . as opposed to Tactical Aid Unit aka the riot van.
To be fair to myself you don't see too many riot vans growing up in Cornwall... Only figured it out when I moved to Brum and wondered why there were so many Welsh police vans out on Broad Street most Saturday nights...
