This is a question Tightwads

There's saving money, and there's being tight: saving money at the expense of other people, or simply for the miserly hell of it.

Tell us about measures that go beyond simple belt tightening into the realms of Mr Scrooge.

Stereotypes
Maybe I'm generalising horribly - I usually do - but I've noticed in the UK, we are quite proud of picking up a bargain. Go round to a mates house and comment on his new plasma telly, and inevitably you'll get the response, "yeah, and I only paid £500" or whatever. In the US, do the same thing and you'll get "yeah! I paid six LARGE for this baby! Woo!" and you might even get a high five. But crass imagery aside (although high fives make me feel quite happy), am I wrong?

I love a bargain, but not at the expense of quality. I'll always buy pro kit if theres an option.

I think you might be right
as per your last paragraph, I always buy better than I can afford. It gets me into trouble, sure, but I hate feeling disappointed.

but remember, cheap, but quality. we're talking 40-50 POUNDS here.

Germans are worse
these days, completely obsessed with getting a bargain. Which leads to inevitable scandals with depressing regularity when some supermarket sells meat that's months out of date, trying to keep up with the competition's prices.

And of course the fact that Tesco, who are expanding all over at the moment (particularly in Eastern Europe and trying to establish a presence in the US) don't DARE to go near Germany because they can't compete with the prices in Aldi and Lidl, who own the market there.

And yes, being thrifty is good, but single-minded obsession with bargains to the detriment of quality is just stupid. Not to mention animal welfare - "I got this chicken for £3, bargain!" Yeah, that's because it spent its pitifully short life squashed into a cage being force-fed antibiotics. Well done you.
