Have to say though,while hearing people using 'basically' does grind, I often find when I'm writing something, I will put the word in, then as I'm checking will tut at myself and delete it.
It is a useful expression, there is some fundamental meaning to it that we do try to communicate, it's just old, trite and has to be replaced.
