Might as well add my own
Professor Kenny's replenishing story reminded me of this. I used to live in a terraced house, that had a staircase running right up the middle of it. At the top of the staircase were two doors, one leading to the bedroom at the front of the house, one leading to the bedroom at the back.

I was doing some DIY type stuff in the back bedroom right next to the door, so I had the door closed. I heard my girlfriend come in the front door, so I shouted "Hello!" and heard her start to come upstairs. The door opened inwards and I didn't want to get hit by it, so as she got to the door I opened it for her. I swear I even felt the doorknob move under my hand - just in time, then. Except when I opened the door, she wasn't there.

It was a pretty strange feeling, I must say. She wasn't downstairs, either. I can only assume that it was someone coming in next door and going up their stairs - we could often hear them moving about, being a terraced house - and I just extrapolated the rest. At least, I assume it was that, and not the shades of previous owners trotting up to bed. Wooooo, etc.
