Maybeone of those torches train drivers get (or got), like my Grandad had. It had a little thing on top that turned the light white, green or red (I guess so that drivers stopped could signal to other approaching trains etc).
Or maybe it was aliens wanting to know WTF was going on on their patch. After all, 5 lads in a car, in dark field, sounds like there's some serious anal probing going on, they just wanted to see who it was in the Cottaging Mobile.
