CDDBI managed to convince a friend that the CDDB was operated by trained monkeys. Inserting your CD into your CD Drive sends a short code to the operating room. A monkey recognises the code and is trained to type in the names of the songs, thence the short delay between inserting the CD and the song names appearing.
