This is a question Winging It

Don Spang says: I once found myself winging it in a job interview and somewhat exaggerated my technical experience in the field of mainframe computer operations. 24 years later, I'm still there. Ever had to improvise to get by? Tell us you tales of MacGyver-type genius.

Thank fuck for Apple
Got a job as head of IT in December, administering an office full of Macs. Hadn't really used a Mac before, but assured them that I wouldn't have any problems doing it. So far, it's been an absolute piece of piss.

Do you drink chamomile tea
and ride a fixie to work?

Have you started lisping yet?

Yeah, but then you'll come to use an actual computer and realise that months of working with a Baby's First Colouring In Machine has buggered your tech ability.

Are you sure?
He's basically admitted to not being able to do his job here.

I thought we just took that as read, hence his lifestyle.

I'm moderately impressed that you 2 can do the
"breathing/typing" combination.

So there you go!

It was actually
about 0230.

I'm seeing that the "getting the concept of international timezones" is a bit beyond you.

Go to bed dad, you're pissed again.

I thought it was a good way of expanding my skill set
Previously all my IT experience was on PC networks and within my first month I'd installed an edit suite, a new server, a fibre network and a tape archive for backing up the footage, I'd replaced the ISP, recabled the office and restored a couple of the sales laptops. So while I was winging it at first, pretty much everything is new anyway and since I put it together, I know how it all works and nothing hardly ever goes wrong. In addition, I now run a mixed network of real computers and glorified Fisher Price activity centres at home and every day is an education in getting them to interact with each other.

All that and I get to write, produce, edit and direct videos professionally. Win-win, I think they call it.

Head of IT?
Don't you mean desktop support monkey?

Ah now, it's a stressful job, what happens if switching it off then on again doesn't work?

Take the cartridge out, blow on it, put it back in.
Or rewind the cassette with a pencil.

That's a bit harsh.
He got the job without any technical assessment and it apparently requires little effort. It is clearly an extremely important position.

I think this is less "winging it" and more "I was interviewed and subsequently given a job by a fucking idiot".
