It's quite a slow game until you start levelling up.
The Go Adventuring button is your friend - it lets you fight baddies close to your level.

EDIT 2: That'll be a class-specific armour (dragonslayer, vampire-slayer, mage, rogue or fighter). You unlock the other options by levelling up within that class (this transcends your normal levelling, so you can be a level 34 character who is also a level 3 dragonslayer and a level 6 mage). Click the 'let me do it' button in the news bit - that'll usually take you to the class quest-givers. Not all of them may be available at any given time.

Level up your intelligence.
Talk to Twilly and he'll let you visit the stat trainers.

Also, as you level up (normally, not the stats), more woo spells will be available in the shops.
