i bought mine when they were about £60, and i can honestly say that i rarely use it.

handy for occasional backups though.

I got my first CD writer when they were £200+ in 1997...
It was scsi and only 2x write speed and packed up after a year :(

we had en external (parallel!!) HP drive when they were mega bucks. it stopped working some time around 1999/2000.

my current cd writer ilacks the ability
to have over burn protection. Plus my dvd drive is shit anyway.

I think all DVD writers now
will burn anything with underrun protection - it's a gift from the gods that.
