[challenge entry] 'The great fire of london,
for when you absolutely positively have to kill every motherfucker in Pudding Lane'
The diary of Samuel L Pepys, September 5th 1666

Does anyone know of a good way to get photos looking like they're an oilpainting in photoshop 7?
This was my rather lame attempt (I know i shoulda altered the levels on the face and blended it in better, but it didn't seem worth it on something that was always going to be a little unsatisfactory), and I tried the filters, but I can't seem to get it quite right. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

edit: why do i always post immediately after something really good, making my lame effort seem even shoddier than it already is? eh? why? bum!

wasn't wanting to piss on your bonfire, of course.

My word. Isn't the board polite tonight?

rather.
strangely pleasant, isn't it

# I think
there is a filter called paint daubs or something :)
(, Sun 28 Sep 2003, 19:34, archived)
# i tried
that, but it didn't seem quite right.
i'll try it again now, thanks

# i've just been having a quick play with those filters
paint daubs is the most oil paintingy filter there, but you probably want to fiddle with the brush size setting
(, Sun 28 Sep 2003, 19:39, archived)
# have just
tried it again on top of angled strokes, and that seems to look a little better, ta

# I've been using paint daubs
for the background of a flash projet, and I think it looks very well as an oily effect.
(, Sun 28 Sep 2003, 19:42, archived)
# it seems great
for larger images, but i'm working on an 18kb source image, so it looks like someone's been using far too big a brush.

# I should think
there's something similar on PS, but on PSP using the Erode and Dilute filters a few times over (alternating) has quite a good effect of oil.

# oooh
thanks very much, I'll give that a whirl too.
thaks everyone, it's been most instructive

# no one actually
died in the great fire.
(, Sun 28 Sep 2003, 19:37, archived)
# not one
single person? even the elderly or infirm? are you sure?
either way, it was the easiest way to make it obvious who it was. couldn't think of any other even vaguely relevant samuel l jackson movie quotes.

# nope, well six, but they'd probably have caught the plague anyway.
in fact it was about 97.5% of BENEFICIAL cos it killed the plague rats and let them sort out the streets.

# i thought
they were already known in principle, but never acted upon. certainly the method of dealing with fires at the time was to hastily construct them by demolishing houses around the blaze, but the mayor of the day was reticent to 'cos of the cost
(, Sun 28 Sep 2003, 19:46, archived)
# reluctant, not reticent.
that would mean he was the silent, mysterious type towards them, like a building-regulations james dean.
(, Sun 28 Sep 2003, 19:47, archived)
# You'd have to give him that one
(, Sun 28 Sep 2003, 19:50, archived)
# Although reluctant is better in the sited context.
(, Sun 28 Sep 2003, 19:51, archived)
# I think you meant
cited, not sited
/hand-that-feeds-him-biting-pedantry
(, Sun 28 Sep 2003, 19:52, archived)
# yeah, but it's reluctant as in personality and being the withdrawn, loner type more than anything else.
and i like the idea of a building-regulations james dean.
(, Sun 28 Sep 2003, 19:52, archived)
# yes
how very stupid of me
great way of putting it
edit: yay i was not incorrect after all

# Er
Six people died in the Great Fire, atch.

Including the maid of the Baker (Mr Farynor) in the house where the fire started - she was too scared to jump from the 1st storey of the house so she wound up burned instead.
