# OH MY BRAIN
I know it's wrong, but it looks so right :(
(, Mon 23 May 2005, 19:29, archived)
# Whoa!
And woo! What's happening to my mind?

this is too strange

edit: How the hell did you come to find that strange effect out?
(, Mon 23 May 2005, 19:30, archived)
# I cannot remember.
I think I heard about it somewhere *ages* ago, and tried it out on a photo of claudia black. But I lost that, then I was mucking about with this photo, and... it just happened...
(, Mon 23 May 2005, 19:34, archived)
# It's made my mind melt.
I keep having to look at it and twist my head around to make sure you're not cheating!
(, Mon 23 May 2005, 19:38, archived)
# It's called the
"Thatcher Illusion" www.michaelbach.de/ot/fcs_thompson-thatcher/

but that's a bloomin great rendition of it
(, Tue 24 May 2005, 12:36, archived)
# freaky

# Poor Brian.
Still, you have to look on the bright side!

# re: Your name.
Are you about 15 by any chance?
(, Mon 23 May 2005, 20:01, archived)
# 26.
Sad, isn't it?
edit : good point though. better change it.
edit 2 : guess the joke's on me, the user name obviously doesn't change once it's on the front page. <blushes>
edit 3 : Might as well change it back.
(, Mon 23 May 2005, 20:05, archived)
# That is bizarre.
It looks perfectly fine the wrong way up.
(, Mon 23 May 2005, 19:34, archived)
# Jeepers!
how strange but also bazoo
(, Mon 23 May 2005, 19:35, archived)
# that's
reet grand
(, Mon 23 May 2005, 19:40, archived)
# Excellent!
Turn somebody's mouth upside down - instant front page.

Am I missing something here?
(, Mon 23 May 2005, 19:59, archived)
# It's the fact that she looks normal upside down.
The brain interprets it weirdly...
(, Mon 23 May 2005, 20:05, archived)
# I don't think my brain
works in quite the same way as everybody elses. I see an upside-down face when it's an upside-down face. Doesn't look normal to me when it's inverted!!111eleveneleven.
(, Wed 25 May 2005, 8:33, archived)
# Oh the face looks upside down when it is.
but the mouth doesn't look hideously wrong on it.
(, Wed 25 May 2005, 13:38, archived)
# it's better
than a very badly drawn pencil, I'd say.
while we've got the handbags out.
(, Mon 23 May 2005, 20:11, archived)
# I like the pencil.
it's good.
And looking at Blackmoon's profile, I like his stuff too. Especially multiplayer pong...
(, Mon 23 May 2005, 20:15, archived)
# the pencil is fine.
it's a good gag.
but we were talking what's worth frontpaging.
I don't think the pencil quite cuts it.
but that's just my opinion.
I also think blackmoon's work is good.
but he didn't do the pencil.
so...
(, Mon 23 May 2005, 20:37, archived)
# Multiplayer pong took me about 10 minutes.
and I was very surprised at how well it was accepted.

Thanks.
(, Wed 25 May 2005, 8:37, archived)
# that IS very strange
indeed!
(, Mon 23 May 2005, 20:08, archived)
# I've seen the effect before,
but only on an expressionless face.

This, sir, is utter brilliance!
(, Mon 23 May 2005, 20:47, archived)
# lovely
(, Mon 23 May 2005, 22:08, archived)
# Jesus Christ,
that's really cool!
(, Mon 23 May 2005, 23:33, archived)
# Cool effect
I have a book all about optical illusions that has a picture with the same effect...except it's of Maggie Thatcher *shudder*.

# dear oh dear

I guess none of you lot have studied undergraduate psychology of perception recently.

The original article is by Peter Thompson, "Margaret Thatcher: a new illusion."
Perception 9:483–484 (1980).

Search google for "thatcher illusion" and you can see various demonstrations...

but still, woo!
(, Tue 24 May 2005, 5:21, archived)
# hahaha
that rules!

i think i dated a girl like that
(, Tue 24 May 2005, 6:27, archived)
# wow!
Thats bonkers. Nice one!
(, Tue 24 May 2005, 8:55, archived)
# !!!
*fwap* *argh!* *fwap* *argh!* *fwap* *argh!*. Stressful.
(, Tue 24 May 2005, 19:04, archived)
# There's a girl on my course
who looks exactly like the "right way up" version. She scares me.
(, Tue 24 May 2005, 19:54, archived)
# Yes,
I can understand that.

(, Tue 24 May 2005, 22:11, archived)
# I doubt anyone's going to reply to this
But I don't get it. Upside down mouth, upside down face. What's the big deal?

EDIT: and I looked at the Maggie Thatcher thing, and it still makes little sense. Though it is certainly disturbing (It is Margaret Thatcher after all) It's pretty clearly just one normal face, and one with obviously superimposed upside down eyes and mouth. Turning it upside down doesn't make that any harder to spot. What optical illusion? I'm confused...
(, Tue 24 May 2005, 23:08, archived)
# I think you must have an unusual brain.
For most of the population, the brain finds it difficult to distinguish that the mouth/eyes are the wrong way up if the picture is the wrong way up.

I looked at one of those Maggie thatcher ones (the one at www.michaelbach.de/ot/fcs_thompson-thatcher/ ) and it kinda worked, but isn't really seamless enough.
