Fire Flight - (Phoneix Dance theatre) - Phantom Flex 1000fps
I made this!
Hi All, it's been many a moons since ive surfaced from the undergrowth, but after months of slogging im back with a new video, This one involves slow motion dancers, 3d fire and its taken a year.
This is "Fire Flight" a promotional music video for the Phoenix Dance Theatre in Leeds that we shot in 2011 on the Phantom Flex. It was produced by Ink Films (www.inkfilms.co.uk) and Uber Agency (www.uberagency.com). Greg Clarks idea was to shoot the dancers at 1000fps and then in post overlay lots of Cg fire onto them so it looked like they had been set alight
The project took just over a year to complete with about 6 months of that being me sat in my room creating and rendering the fire in Maya. I had never even opened Maya before and it was Chris Birks of VTR north (www.vtrnorth.co.uk) that showed me how to use the program and who built the original rig so i could go off and fester away in my room setting people on fire for half a year
"Fire Flight" - The Phoenix Dance Theater
Director - Greg Clark (Uber Agency) - www.uberagency.com
Producer -- Steve Perry (Ink Films) - www.inkfilms.co.uk
DOP -- Mik Allen
VFX & Fire -- Ben Daure & Chris Birks (VTR North) - www.vtrnorth.co.uk
Editor -- Ben Daure
Programs Used - Maya, After Effects and Premiere
I do hope you enjoy it

fanstastic, have a clicky, but can't help wondering if it would have been quicker and cheaper to set the buggers on fire for real.

It absolutely would
you are 100% correct there, it was more a show piece to see if we could do it, but yes, in hindsight a bit of paraffin and a match would have been far... far quicker. and we would save on the catering too as we could cook lunch on the char'd bodies

HA
Excellent, especially the one where she opens and lifts her legs way above her head, you wouldn't want to be around when that one went off

I think the traditional 'Stop, Drop and Roll' could have helped these people more.

Good stuff
Although I reckon employing only really slow dancers with plastic arms and wooden legs and setting them alight, would have only taken about a day and a half to complete this

Welcome back to the real world after your year's self-enforced exile. You've not missed much... except the bit about horses. And the Pope.

Why Thank you
I've only been let out for today as im back working on another epic animation, but it's certainly a lot colder than it was last time i was allowed out. I've not heard anything about horses but i did win a years supply of findus ready meals to keep me going.

Why Thank you
I'm glad you enjoyed it so much, thank you very much for the glowing feedback. hopefully the praise wont rush to my head too soon, i wouldnt want a sudden surge to make my skull implode and spew out brain matter everywhere. it would take far too long to scoop back up.

He has nothing on this
Those flares aren't done in post production, we built massive reflective boards and stuck them to the dancers, we then boosted the shine by using thick cuts of ham bundled together with a 2K lamps on them, worked well
