I thought he was going to be handed a parachute in midair, but no. He must have been supremely confident to stage the landing in front of a crowd.

They do make ones very slim (compared to standard rigs) for use in stunt work. I did wonder what the plan was if it looked like they were being blown off course.. You can't just hold on to someone else whilst they open their parachute (I have tried this). One of the other jumpers who stayed very close to him had what looked like a loop in his hand - maybe that was to try quickly putting it around the guy's wrist if things didn't look good.
