Well then. I guess it's the evening thread.
I am being a shut in tonight and shall probably get gently sloshed in front of the telly/internet whilst tomorrow night I'm off out getting heavily drunk in Town with a mate.

You?

Oh gosh oh gosh we do got TWO evening threads. Who do we go for? THIS ONE.
Hurrah! We've all paid for a plane to bring the olympic flame to this country.

Except the majority of this country won't get any sort of benefit from the charade.

We don't want the fucking thing either. I'd happily have another city take it, pity they're all to shit to host such a thing. London's amazingness is its own worst enemy sometimes.

London is a fine city
But it isn't Britain. There's an awful lot of UK out here and - as usual - it gets ignored, this time on an international stage.
(, Fri 18 May 2012, 19:49, Reply)
Things get ignored for a reason.

(, Fri 18 May 2012, 19:51, Reply)
What reason?
Do you not think that Newcastle isn't a good venue for some of the games? Gateshead arena?
(, Fri 18 May 2012, 19:53, Reply)
Newcastle is a great place and with a bit of investment could host a couple things.
But you're not help making your point by mentioning Gateshead stadium. It's an absolute fucking dump.
(, Fri 18 May 2012, 19:58, Reply)
But rather than spending our money on a whole new venue
Couldn't we have spent less money on improving it and attracted a cash investment from visitors?

I haven't seen much improvement.
And I've been in and around East London where the games are going to be - Clapton, Shoreditch, Hackney, Mile End, Bethnel Green etc - loads the past month or so. I honestly wouldn't know there'd been improvements unless someone told me. That said the new Kings Cross and London Bridge concourses are nice. Don't make a difference to the actual travelling, mind.

still here
still a bit weak and brainwrong to do much else.

btw: Paris was great. I was there for 2 months and I was on my own (except for a strange guy on the floor below who I hung out with for a week or so) but I still had a great time going to cafes, art galleries and just generally hanging around the city each weekend. I saw Foofighters there, too, it was their first tour. Again, I went alone and didn't feel threatened even at 1am in a big city (although the people I worked with were a little shocked - they said something in French to each other about how it's much more violent in Britain so I must be used to it).

I was only 19, still pretty naive and I'd have got up to more highjynx if I'd been older, but still a cool city.
(, Fri 18 May 2012, 21:57, Reply)
Amazing, cheers for that.
Props to you for going alone by the way, it's something that I say that I'd love to do but never could. Going alone anywhere that is. I can travel to places on my own no bother but I couldn't stay somewhere alone. I cannot speak to new people, it's something I just can't bring myself to do. If they're friends of friends that's fine, but strangers, not a chance. If they start speaking to me I can talk til the cows come home, but I can never make that initial contact.
Would you ever live there again?
(, Fri 18 May 2012, 21:59, Reply)
heh, I seem to do everything alone, I wouldn't want to miss out on doing something cool just because I was relying on other people
I'm not great at making new friends, though, people seem to think I'm weird. I wish I wasn't resigned to this fact.

If there wasn't the matter of my job, house and friends round here I wouldn't mind living there again, although not right in the middle, I'm not a big fan of cities. Whatever people say, if you make the effort to talk in French, French people are largely all right and often answer in english. If they answer in French, it's usually a compliment on your French skills
(, Fri 18 May 2012, 22:03, Reply)
I think I'd fit in well over there.
Snooty, blasé and deluded as to how suave I am. I want to live over there (with a girl in tow) more than anything. I'd definitely try and learn the language first, I think it's nothing less than rude not to.
(, Fri 18 May 2012, 22:08, Reply)
i thought that about wales (the language that is, not the rest of it)
but I've been here 18 years and the only time I needed the language was when I accidentally turned up to a Welsh speaking church
(, Fri 18 May 2012, 22:10, Reply)
Ha.
I can't think of anything more pointless than speaking Welsh. I would pay a million quid to be able to speak fluent French tomorrow though.
I just spilt wine all over my speakers. No more dancing.
(, Fri 18 May 2012, 22:17, Reply)
there is a major advantage to speaking welsh
mostly no one else does so it's like a secret code for making fun of people behind their backs. At least that's what I think they're doing

*tinfoil hat*
(, Fri 18 May 2012, 22:20, Reply)
Learning Welsh, the effort required =/= the reward.
If I want to make fun of people I'll do it regardless. Not that I ever would, I'm a nice guy.
(, Fri 18 May 2012, 22:29, Reply)
if you don't live in wales
you don't even get the benefit of extra consideration for some jobs. I reckon people wanting to get into any form of media in wales should start learning the language, it's not going to be all that competitive to get into S4C/HTV
(, Fri 18 May 2012, 22:32, Reply)
I always think that if you are going to visit a country
The very least you can learn is how to say please and thank you.
You'll probably need more than that if you're going to live there though.

There's a Mexican bar in Spitalfields where on Sundays the staff only speak Spanish.
To make things 'quirky' and 'fun'. I asked for the bill in Spanish because I know what it is anyway - but I told them I was a quarter Spanish, on the count of me being quarter Spanish, before I knew about the Spanish speaking thing, after that they looked at me in disgust for the rest of the time I was in there because I only knew a few phrases.
