I don't think that they should have ever been brought in, not in their current form.
Public houses and clubs should have had to have had a properly ventilated designated smokers area. The smoking ban had a massive effect on public houses, no matter what CAMRA may claim to the contrary.

Drastic drop in takings.
I was working across three different city centre pubs, two social clubs and a small out of town pub when the ban came in (Cellar maintenance and a few other bits.) The city centre pubs lost about 20% of their gross revenue revenue when the ban was implemented, the social clubs lost about 45% (Although their customers were dying off rapidly anyway) Within a year, the small out of town pub was closed by the brewery and the site sold to be converted to flats.
