Tried my hand at an avatar cat person photoshop.
Next time i'll try and blend the hair better I think.
There's a big version on flickr. Also, I put a before and after with the original here. here.

though you're right, the lighting about the top of the head and temples is a little off - looks too desaturated, maybe add some blue?

also, I never figured out whether this was a terribly subtle hoax, or these people really are this sad

The fact that you and others aren't sure indicates they've done a good job.
