i think the siver foil might work better, or maybe using les dreid out petals that might not absorb the glue so much, (as it was i had to lay it on quite thick before it'd take, so the lines aren't as fiddly as on the pen ones i did)

If you're working with a less fragile surface you might be able to make the metal leaf smoother.
