That doesn't make much senseevery player on the field is an otherwise top-flight player at league level, they simply disintegrate at international level, year after year

Gerrard was played out of position, so he drifts infield and goes against the managers plans. So if he doesn't want to play where he's selected we get someone who can.
If that means Downing than so be it, he might be an inferior player but if he's a tactical fit then that surely has to be better that the last three failed world cups
