[ducks behind metaphorical sandbags.....]
This +1
We tried the softly soft approach with Eriksson, didn't work.
We tried the chummy pal approach with McLaren, didn't work.
We tried the hard line approach with Capello, didn't work.
Virtually the same players under all three regimes.
Ergo the players have to go, and we select those that want to play for the manager

That doesn't make much sense
every player on the field is an otherwise top-flight player at league level, they simply disintegrate at international level, year after year
I have no idea why

I have no idea why
When the players think they know best
sounds like a recipe for mini-rebellions
Gerrard was played out of position, so he drifts infield and goes against the managers plans. So if he doesn't want to play where he's selected we get someone who can.
If that means Downing than so be it, he might be an inferior player but if he's a tactical fit then that surely has to be better that the last three failed world cups
