you are rightbut the news agencies are mainly responsible for touting it as news. If it was just left to the gossip magazines/website and ignored by news agencies (unless it really IS news) then may be things will change.
also - as A Vagabond (and Pliny) said - many, MANY people have nothing else to fill their empty heads with. Perhaps people these days suffer from information overload, so just shut down to all but the most basic and easy to absorb stuff.
