# Stop Piling On Mel Gibson Already!

Click for bigger (66 kb)

For (Passion of the) Christ's sake, we've established that Mel Gibson's a horrible person. Now get over it.

do you at least somewhat agree or am I on my own here? maybe it's bc I work at a news media website and get bombarded w/lohan-esque stories nonstop, but this endless cycle of celebrity crap coverage is the reason society is ass backwards and so god damn dumb...and getting dumber. Excluding everyone here, of course.

# In the words of Pliny
"The youth in these times are more interested in gossiping, and in music, and in the pursuit of leisure than they are in education, knowledge, and honour."
(, Wed 14 Jul 2010, 13:39, archived)
# you are right
but the news agencies are mainly responsible for touting it as news. If it was just left to the gossip magazines/website and ignored by news agencies (unless it really IS news) then may be things will change.

also - as A Vagabond (and Pliny) said - many, MANY people have nothing else to fill their empty heads with. Perhaps people these days suffer from information overload, so just shut down to all but the most basic and easy to absorb stuff.

# Yeah, that's why they were all vacuous whores in the first century AD
too much internet.
(, Wed 14 Jul 2010, 14:26, archived)
# THEY DID TOO HAVE INTERNET - IT WAS JUST ALL WRITTEN IN SQUIGGLES ON STONES N THAT
(, Wed 14 Jul 2010, 14:33, archived)
# So long as people want to keep sucking it up, you're stuck with it I'm afraid.
I try to avoid it if possible, though I did enjoy reading about Jordan's wedding. Photographers wounded in warzones probably have a club. Photographers wounded outside Stringfellows probably carry a club.

# He was good in Lethal Weapon
though 1 and 2 are the only ones worth watching. (2 for Patsy Kensit getting her bits out for an airing) DEPLOMETIC EEMUNITEE!

# Payback was ace
And Mrs Vagabond gets all giggly when she watches Tim.
(, Wed 14 Jul 2010, 13:38, archived)
# Payback is good, but you should seek out Point Blank with Lee Marvin
which is based on the same story. Lee Marvin is fucking terrifying in that film.

# Bollocks
Sleb-slapping's great.

Who didn't enjoy the MPs expenses scandal? Who didn't crack a fatty at the face the Duchess of York pulled when she was busted the other day? Who hasn't googled for their fave slebs nekkid?

We love to gossip. It's part of our cultural and behavioural make-up.

# I think there's an important distinction between a "celebrity" getting drunk and falling over yet again
or putting their own sex tape out to further their career and what Gibson's doing and getting away with.
If he is guilty of domestic violence and being such a racist prick then I say throw everything at him.
I don't see why we should be ashamed, we're not the ones punching girlfriends in the face (or most of us anyway)

Also, take part you spammer, this isn't a shop front its a community
(, Wed 14 Jul 2010, 13:39, archived)
# im not interested in mel gibson getting drunk and falling over
and i'm not really interested in rumours that he beats up his girlfriend. If there's enough evidence, obviously he should go to court but trial by media is neither fair or constructive.
(, Wed 14 Jul 2010, 14:06, archived)
# I'm talking about whether it should be in the news
Anything highlighting domestic abuse and showing it to be wrong and accountable is a good thing. Not whether the press should pass judgement
(, Wed 14 Jul 2010, 14:09, archived)
# it shouldnt be in the news if it means he cant get a fair trial
(, Wed 14 Jul 2010, 14:27, archived)
# If someone thrusts themselves into the public eye out of choice for extreme personal gain,
as Gibson has, then they've chosen everything that goes with it. Anyone who is surprised by the invasive nature of celebrity has not been paying attention.
(, Wed 14 Jul 2010, 14:17, archived)
# im not a domestic abuse apologist
but if the media coverage predjudices any potential trial then i think it should be curtailed. The papers can tear him apart after the trial for all I care but he's entitled to a fair hearing, the same as everyone else.
(, Wed 14 Jul 2010, 14:23, archived)
# It really is academic.
He's rich, he's not going to have any kind of problem in an American court.

and you're completely missing the point (or from what you write it sounds like it). in no way am i condoning anything gibson has done, it's obv. horrible. but shit like that happens all over the world every single day, and far worse atrocities occur every single day, so to spend all this time and energy and money on one god damn actor is just silly and a waste considering what the human race could be doing with its time, etc.. i don't have any solutions, but i sense we're heading or have already headed down the wrong path. basically, i wish i was born in 1900. and i mean no personal ill will whatsoever, unless you do, in which case it's on.
(, Wed 14 Jul 2010, 18:27, archived)
# Not sticking up for Mel...
but I know a bad relationship/beautiful girl out of my league/other man supermulticombo turned me into a horrible, dribbling idiot. nowhere near hitting anyone but, i'd hate to hear some of the things i said at the time.

im not saying it should not be covered, but the sheer AMOUNT of coverage takes away from real issues that go unnoticed or under reported. i mean it's human nature to flock to gossip and be intrigued, it's just left me a little disillusioned, and perhaps I'm the one w/problems and not the media, I'm not discounting that. but we seem to get obsessed w/stories that, bottom line, MEAN NOTHING, that's all I'm saying. I'm not saying I don't do the same thing, it's more of an indictment of society and the direction we're heading. and i'm not above calling myself a hypocrite and perhaps jaded and cynical and even wrong, but i do think it's an argument worth having. the news has been hijacked by crap, that's my point, but i guess it be's what it be's and there's nothing i can do about it. ok, i'm done, sorry if i offended you, i mean that sincerely.
(, Wed 14 Jul 2010, 13:58, archived)
# Real issues don't exist.
Only those one is interested in.

If you work for a news agency you know the news value index, come on.
(, Wed 14 Jul 2010, 14:17, archived)

that's just a lazy excuse, in my opinion, and it's only my opinion. just bc something is the status quo doesn't mean it can't change, but change is hard and that's the crux of it all. we're all looking out for ourselves, myself included, and we forget about bigger issues or ignore them b/c it means changing. bc real issues do exist, but i guess they have to personally touch you before you come to that realization.

I blame the press

just b/c i dont COMMENT on other posts does not mean i don't LOOK at other posts, whether you believe it or not. now i'm leaving for work. i feel like i have to apologize for that, too, so i'm sorry for leaving for work.

have you ever thought about a lobotomy? no pressure, obviously, just throwing it out there. They get a bad rap but for some they can do wonders.
