basically I find it works best if you have extremes of light and dark in whatever you're shooting, lots of exposures and then alot of fiddling with it in Photomatix.

it's a bit of a cliche, but basically just try processing as many different shots as you can and eventually it starts to make sense :)

I shoot 6 exposures from -3 through to +2 with 1 stop gaps...the better your camera the more you'll get out of shooting even more exposures

alot of the "pro's" shoot -4 to to +4 with the full frame cameras, +4 on mine is generally just white!
