i feel your paini nearly lost 2 40GB drives that way - turned out (as far as i could tell) that my IDE controllers were goosed & i had to replace my mobo. my advice - don't tinker with it any more, get those drives installed in another machine if you have one, or have a kind friend, and get all the data off them if it's still recoverable. *then* worry about what to do next....

sounds to me likeyou either have a fujitsu or an ibm hard drive there, i have knackered 3 of each of those before warranty and patience wore out

i hada fujitsu master & a WD slave. i'm not convinced the drive wasn't the culprit either, but there was other weird shit going on too. now i've the 40GB WD as master & an 80GB barracuda slave, and the fujitsu makes an attractive paperweight.
