I was just rendering a huge file that I completed editing. It was just getting to the end and suddenly my second hard drive started creaking and wirring. A blue screen of death popped up but it was one I haven't seen before:
'Unable to write to drive D: all flies may be lost'
That scared the life out of me. Nothing would work then, my computer totally crashed, which is does sometimes but this time even the mouse wasn't moving.
The D drive was still making crunching sounds so I switched my computer off. When I switched it back on again there was no noise and I let the scandisk work it's way through both my drives which took ages... then everything was fine again. No problems, nothing.
I backed up all my important files from my documents and other bits onto my c drive, just to be on the safe side. Then I tried the same job that crashed my computer the first time... and it happened again!
Anyway, I think I've got a dead 60gig drive on my hands, which pisses me off. Either that or a virus. I hope not a virus.

it counts as "using a messageboard to pass on a message"
We're more liberal nowadays, so long as there's an obvious point... this time it's "how can I tell if my drive's fucked" :)

They're easily fixed right? Plus, HD's are cheap - £20 for a 40gb at my local PC store.

I like when people port scan me and probe me and..stuff just to see what my firewall does.

the drive is failing. copy everything you can from it that you need now before it fails completely, then send it back to who you bought it from (assuming it is still under warranty)

I have an 80GB drive I bought recently, and it seems to have MAJOR issues when receiving files over a certain size (about 50MB) - it'll just kill the system, and require a reboot if it's not already caused one...

fried itself, whilst dealing with big files.
It completely cooked itself one afternoon, transfering all it's stickers ink onto my duvet.
Then it just died.

i nearly lost 2 40GB drives that way - turned out (as far as i could tell) that my IDE controllers were goosed & i had to replace my mobo. my advice - don't tinker with it any more, get those drives installed in another machine if you have one, or have a kind friend, and get all the data off them if it's still recoverable. *then* worry about what to do next....

you either have a fujitsu or an ibm hard drive there, i have knackered 3 of each of those before warranty and patience wore out

a fujitsu master & a WD slave. i'm not convinced the drive wasn't the culprit either, but there was other weird shit going on too. now i've the 40GB WD as master & an 80GB barracuda slave, and the fujitsu makes an attractive paperweight.

it's not a virus, it's a dud drive
if there's vital stuff on there you may need to go to professionals to get it off. There are lots of ads in the back of the geek press for disk rescuers.
The more you try to use it the more damage you're going to do to it.
sorry it's not good news.
