a comment posted on a Youtube of the America version:
For years I thought this song was a novelty or a joke. But the more I investigate and listen to the various versions including the original Willis Alan Ramsey version, the more obvious it is that this was a straight-faced, serious song.
This only confirms my suspicion that I was born in the wrong decade. The drugs they were on back then must have been some fucking potent shit if everyone's gourds were too scrambled to even consider rolling on the floor laughing when this song came on the radio
