I just tried this out with VLC and it worked, although it's not very user-friendly.(For instance if you have 'repeat current file' turned on, it endlessly converts the file until you press stop, resulting in a half-completed unplayable result. And the navigation interface is terrible. And I don't think it likes overwriting existing files, so you have to give each attempt a new name, or keep deleting the previous ones.)
