Now just try using a soft edged eraser on the bottom bit of his neck to take away the hard edge....

You don't know by any chance how to select SOFT edged eraser in gimp do you? I use photoshop and don;t no where the option is in gimp

there are various options in the panel underneath. will ahve a play!
