when you say 'soft edged eraser' do you mean the blur tool?

# No.. blur is not usually any good at blending because it just blurs the edge... which is then as obvious as a seam...
What is meant by a soft edge earser is, click on the easer tool, and then select a soft edged brush, I don;t know how to do this in gimp, but it might be right click the properties of the brush and select of there maybe options in the toolbar once you have selected eraser...

Any gimp users here know how to do it?
